Missionary Emphasis week rounded out with a good service today. We had a local Hispanic church visit this morning. They not only performed special music, but one shared his testimony and the pastor also explained the ministry focus of the church and some upcoming events. The church is composed of all South and Central American Christians. They are trying to reach the Hispanic community in Longview, the majority of whom are Mexican.
Missionary to Brazil, Charlotte Hisle, spoke. She is a teacher at a Bible College in Sao Paolo. She shared about her concern about teaching the students about the balance between knowing God profoundly and experiencing God profoundly. The easy thing, she stated, is to graduate a Pharisee. One who has the intellectual head knowledge of Scripture, but not the heart. She always starts her study of God with one three letter word...WOW! God is so much greater than our current intellect can understand. Students of Scripture that expect to understand everything, will miss the mark.
She directed us to an interesting portion of Scripture, John 2:22-25. Jesus was performing many miracles during this time and many were coming to believe in His name. However, it says that Jesus did not entrust himself to them, for He knows all men and He knew what was in a man.
So the challenge posed was twofold. One is how do we treat the Word of God when we study it? Is it just some intellectual exercise that we go through or are we truly feeding on the Word? Secondly, reflecting on this portion of Scripture, would Jesus treat you as trustworthy?
