Hope Fellowship Sermon Notes: February 19, 2006

Did you know it is impossible to live a life of holiness apart from Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit? You can shutter yourself away from all evil influences or commit to acts of selfless service, but the Bible tells us it is all like filthy rags apart from Christ.

In John 16:14, we learn that the Holy Spirit has a singular purpose. This purpose is to glorify Jesus Christ. How does the Spirit do this? By taking what is from Jesus and making it known to believers. The Spirit clarifys things.

An example would be a pair of glasses that you need in order to clearly see your surroundings, or perhaps to read the paper. These glasses serve to correct your vision in order to bring things into focus. The Holy Spirit has the same purpose. Just as it is not about the glasses, but rather reading the paper; neither is it about the Holy Spirit, but rather in seeing Jesus Christ more clearly. The Holy Spirit serves to clarify, magnify, and glorify Jesus Christ.

Questions are often raised by both believers and non-believers alike during hard times or times of tradgedy. Questions like, 'Why did God let this happen?' or 'What did I do wrong that God is punishing me?'. The fact is, these questions reveal an ignorance about what the Bible tells us. Just as the Holy Spirit's purpose is to glorify Jesus Christ, so to it is our purpose. When God allows bad things to happen to Christians, I believe that it is for the singular purpose of glorifying Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that all things work together for good, to them that love God. This good is the magnifying, clarifying, and glorifying of Jesus Christ. Praise to the Lord!
